Join us for the first-ever LIVE Rubbish Talk episode. Today’s podcast comes straight to you from the CIWM Pre-Christmas Lunch event, with a live audience listening to Alasdair chatting to Louise Robertson and Nina Cameron who recently undertook the University West of Scotland’s Waste Industry CPD modules.
Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM) is a professional body based in the United Kingdom that focuses on the sustainable and responsible management of waste. CIWM plays a crucial role in promoting best practices, knowledge sharing, and professional development within the waste management sector. CIWM aims to advance the understanding and application of sustainable waste management principles to minimise environmental impact, promote recycling, and contribute to a more circular economy.
The UWS CPD modules were developed in partnership with Scottish Waste Industry Training, Competency, and Health & Safety (SWITCH) and focus on enhancing the knowledge, skills, and expertise of professionals in the waste management sector. Some common topics covered in such modules may include, regulatory compliance, health & safety, community engagement, and waste reduction strategies.
Louise is the Site Manager at Keenan Recycling based at the New Deer depot where she oversees the production of BSI PAS100-accredited compost and Biofuel from commercial food waste collections, combined with local authorities’ plant materials and organic waste recycled from parks, gardens, and households.
Louise is relatively new to the waste industry; her background was in compliance/ HSEQ within the oil and gas sector. Throughout her time at Keenan’s Louise has enjoyed the operations side of the business and continued to attend courses to further her knowledge. Since completing the University West of Scotland CPD modules, she has gone on to start her CIWM (WAMITAB) Certificate of Technical Competence (COTC) which will lead the way for a great future in the waste management sector.
Nina is the Senior Waste Partnership Officer at Dundee City Council where she represents Dundee City & Angus Councils in their Waste Partnership – a sustainable long-term solution for residual waste treatment.
Nina’s journey into local government started in 2017 when armed with a BSc in Geography & Environmental Science, she embarked on a graduate active travel work experience placement. Quickly recognizing her passion for public service, she transitioned into the Council’s Waste Strategy Team as a project assistant, laying the foundation for an exciting career ahead in waste management.
Join Louise and Nina as they share their experiences of the University West of Scotland CPD course and navigating the world of waste management as relative newcomers.
