Episode 31: Colin Clark, Director of Cireco & Volunteer Director of ILM Highland

This week, we welcome Colin Clark as our guest, who dedicated his entire career to the Waste Sector before retiring.

With over 35 years of experience, Colin held Senior Management and Leadership roles in Waste and Environmental Management, as well as Public Health. His extensive expertise spanned various services, including Waste Collection, Treatment, Disposal, Street Cleansing, Environmental Health and Grounds Maintenance.

Colin embarked on his journey in the Waste Sector in 1981, initially in the Waste & Public Health Business. Throughout his career, he worked with diverse organisations such as the NHS, Academia, Private Sector and Local Government.

After retiring from Highland Council in 2016, Colin continued his involvement in the sector as a consultant. Currently he serves as a Director for Cireco and volunteers as a Director for ILM Highland.

Scottish Vape Ban Planned for 2025

The Scottish Government has today published legislation to ban the sale and supply of single-use vapes from April 2025. Following a UK-wide consultation on tackling youth vaping and creating a smoke-free generation, the decision was made last month to ban the disposable devices across all four nations.

 

“Toaster Tax”

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs is currently consulting on plans to change rules to drive up the re-use and recycling of waste electrical goods. Proposed reforms of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Regulations (WEEE) include plans for larger shops to ‘take back’ used electrical items. Does the waste sector need to get much better at challenging misleading articles like “toaster tax”?

 

Lidl launches Bottle Return Trial
Lidl launches a bottle return scheme trial in Glasgow that pays customers 5p for every eligible drinks container they return without charging them a deposit when purchasing items.

 

Brown bin charges for garden waste could be scrapped by Scottish Government

Scottish Government likely to make garden waste collection a statutory service, one they will have to reimburse councils for. Having rejected a planned charge last year councillors will have to look again at imposing charges to uplift garden waste.
